Interdisciplinary Seminar in Psychosocial Oncology Practice and Research

Dr. Barbara Jones, PhD, MSW, is Assistant Dean for Health Affairs, Professor and Co-Director, The Institute for Collaborative Health Research and Practice at the UT Austin School of Social Work. Dr. Jones is the Past-President of the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers (APOSW) and a member of the Children’s Oncology Group. Dr. Jones is a Board Member of the Social Work Hospice/Palliative Care Network. Dr. Jones is also a Project on Death in America Social Work Scholar and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Work in Palliative and End-of-Life Care and The Journal of Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology.

Course Description

This course explores research and practice issues in psychosocial oncology through guided independent study and presentations. The course is designed for master’s and doctoral level students who have an interest in oncology including those students in social work, nursing, psychology, public health, health kinesiology, law, sociology, medicine, health education, business, human ecology, nutrition, and pharmacy.

Issues in psychosocial oncology such as adjustment, stress and coping, resilience, impact on family and caregivers, survivorship, palliative care, ethics, health care disparities, grief and loss, and other related topics will be addressed.

Course assignments will allow students to investigate their own areas of interest in oncology.
